The initial film's distinctive, unfiltered feel isn’t entirely present here, yet this remains a reasonably enjoyable sequel, with Paul Hogan retaining his appeal as the straightforward, now happily married “Mick.” He and “Sue” (Linda Kozlowski) are settled in New York, engaging in activities like dynamite fishing in the Hudson River and generally becoming a beloved oddity among city residents. The plot gets moving when it’s her former husband, photographer “Bob” (Dennis Boutsikaris), who becomes tangled with a violent drug operation led by the man known as “Rico” (Hechter Ubarry), identifiable by his silk shirts. "Sue" is abducted by Rico's henchmen, prompting Mick to rescue her and then they escape to the safer setting of “Walter’s” (John Meillon) outback home. However, “Rico” isn’t one for letting things go and pursues them relentlessly. The situation shifts, and with assistance from an old friend and some clever locals, "Mick" begins seeking retribution. The movie does feel extended, and it takes a while to gain momentum; however, once the action moves away from the city and into the wilderness, the characters return closer to their portrayals in the 1986 original, the animals receive more prominent screen time, and there’s a noticeable resemblance to “Miami Vice”—though with less extravagance and greater naturalism. I would have appreciated more of Meillon's comedic banter, as at times the dialogue feels somewhat dense, but despite showing its age, it’s still quite entertaining and unconventional.
