A gang of American bank robbers find themselves stranded in a vast swamp after their plane crashes while en route to Acapulco. Along with some fellow passengers, these criminals attempt to reach safety, but they’re hunted by a massive crocagator said to live within the murky waters. A concerned boyfriend of one of the flight attendants arranges for a bush pilot to join the search for anyone who managed to survive the wreck. “Crocodile 2: Death Swamp” (2002) might be considered a lower-tier monster movie, but it has surprising aspirations. The focus on survival within the swamp feels like a new idea, and there’s an exciting sense of adventure throughout. The criminals are truly despicable characters, and their behavior only deteriorates as circumstances become increasingly dire. Despite its limited resources, the film holds up reasonably well when compared to movies like “Anaconda” (1997) and “Anacondas: Hunt for the Blood Orchid” (2004). It’s not quite as polished as those films, but it comes close. The biggest shortcoming is occasionally flawed computer-generated imagery used for the creature itself. It's disappointing that one of the more appealing female characters disappears fairly early in the story (Anna Cranage played Julie). Heidi Lenhart, portraying Mia, is acceptable, I suppose. The movie has a running time of 1 hour and 20 minutes and was filmed in India, with post-production work completed in Hyderabad. GRADE: B-
