This movie from the mid-80s delivers an enjoyable experience, managing to be both silly and frightening at times. The story involves tiny, furry aliens causing trouble for a rural community in America, as two bounty hunters pursue them. "Critters" (1986) borrows the fundamental idea of alien invasion movies from the 1950s—think “The Blob” or “War of the Worlds”—but combines it with the fuzzy monsters and style of "Gremlins," which came out just two years earlier. The Kansas farm and town setting is reminiscent of young Clark Kent’s life in “Superman” (1978). It does a skillful job of maintaining a line between being lighthearted and entertaining, and a genuinely frightening monster movie. There's an atmosphere similar to "Neon Maniacs" from the same year, but this film is better, as well as exceeding "Gremlins." Dee Wallace stands out as the wife and mother; she’s never been in better form, and Nadine Van der Velde deserves recognition for her role as the daughter. A young Billy Zane appears as her boyfriend, while Terrence Mann has a significant double role—and he also wrote the memorable song on the soundtrack, “Power of the Night.” What I appreciate is that this isn't your standard alien visitation film. The inclusion of the interstellar bounty hunters introduces an intriguing new element, an idea that would be copied the following year by "The Hidden." It has a runtime of 1 hour and 26 minutes and was filmed in Valencia and Santa Clarita, which is about a 45-minute drive northwest of downtown Los Angeles. GRADE: B+/A-
