"Critters" stands out as an unusual movie—one that overcomes significant challenges to find its mark. This blend of science fiction, horror, and comedy benefits from its limited resources, which become part of what makes it appealing. The story focuses on a family farm under assault by Crites, creatures from another world with a serious appetite, instead of presenting a crisis affecting the entire planet. While this narrower scope is probably because of budgetary constraints, it’s effective in allowing viewers to connect with the people involved, even the Crites themselves. These aren't simply space-borne Gremlins; they possess their own form of communication (with subtitles provided) and, due to their small number, the filmmakers were able to develop them as characters through their interactions with one another and their surroundings—a moment where one attempts to communicate with an alien toy is genuinely amusing. It's not a masterpiece, but it provides enjoyable entertainment for ninety minutes. Just be aware that later installments don’t live up to this initial offering.
