I didn’t have high hopes for *Critters Attack!*, especially considering the cheesy promotional image and the fact that it's a fourth sequel arriving 27 years after the previous installment. It isn’t as awful as I feared, though without some creative kills, my rating would be slightly lower. The way the creatures are used and how those who suffer from them meet their end is clever; I found every instance of that quite enjoyable. Unfortunately, everything else around those moments holds it back. The acting is disappointing, to put it kindly, and the central plot feels unoriginal—they essentially copied *Gremlins* for this one. Tashiana Washington manages to be a memorable performer among the cast, and Dee Wallace seems to return in an unofficial capacity from the 1986 original; which was nice, but I wouldn't have recognized her or "Aunt Dee" if I hadn’t already known. Her character didn’t make much of an impression on me in the first film anyway. I also want to give Jake (played by Jack Fulton) some credit for kicking the critters during a fight scene. While watching the earlier films, I often wondered why no one was doing that—or if I was simply forgetting. It seems like the most straightforward and effective way to deal with those football-shaped creatures. Apparently, this 2019 release signals the end of the franchise. The last two entries aren't particularly good, but the first three made experiencing them all worthwhile.
