The narrative picks up with the continued presence of Crites on Earth, prompting Ug (Terrence Mann) and two other interstellar bounty hunters to return for an extermination mission, joined by Charlie (Don Keith Opper), a human outsider. Brad (Scott Grimes) finds himself in the same location when they arrive, and he joins forces with his new girlfriend (Liane Curtis) to deal with the threat of these furry creatures. “Critters 2: The Main Course” (1988) has some enjoyable moments, but it doesn’t measure up to its predecessor from two years earlier. It feels more exaggerated and silly, which makes it harder to get invested in the story like you could with the first film. Liane Curtis, as Megan, is a definite improvement over the young woman who appeared in “Critters,” although the director didn't seem to know how to best use her. Roxanne Kernohan’s appearance as a bounty hunter Lee’s companion is amusing. Her brief nude scene from the chest up is unexpected for a PG-13 movie. Sadly, she would pass away five years later in a car accident. The character of bounty hunter Lee, with his unusual look, paired with Ug, creates what they call the team “Ug-Lee.” There are enough funny scenes to make it worthwhile if you enjoyed the initial film, like when a large sphere of critters rolls over someone and leaves behind only their bloody remains. Still, it’s disappointing when held up against the first one. The movie has a running time of 1 hour, 26 minutes and was filmed in Santa Clarita, California, which is situated 32 miles northwest of downtown Los Angeles. GRADE: B-/C+
