The initial "Critters" movie was a modestly budgeted science fiction/horror film about monsters that somehow succeeded in blending sci-fi, horror, suspense, and comedy together, even with a PG-13 rating—though only two deaths occur throughout the entire story. Sadly, despite clear attempts to recreate that original feeling, "Critters 2" doesn't quite achieve it. Several factors contribute to this disappointment. Even though the budget for this film was twice as high as the first one, it’s not really apparent on screen. It seems most of the extra money went toward more puppets, since there are supposedly hundreds of Crites causing chaos this time around. That's strange because, frankly, the creatures don't seem to get much actual screentime, considering the plot is now split between their attack and the townspeople’s disbelief about what happened before—they even accuse the boy from the first film, who has returned to town, of being responsible for the incidents. This brings up a second problem. The original movie tried to give the Crites some personality. While they were still constantly eating, there was at least some interaction between them and with their surroundings, which helped develop them a bit more. In this one, even though we hear them speaking occasionally (in their own language), it's just brief lines here and there. There are simply too many of them to allow for any individual characters or leaders to emerge. As a result, the film turns out to be quite boring compared to its surprisingly enjoyable predecessor. It’s not a sequel that does the original justice.
