Among Tony Scott’s movies, this one stands out as possibly my absolute favorite. The performances from both Hackman and Washington are excellent, and the rest of the cast is terrific too; Scott really maintains the tension throughout, creating a very focused experience. I hear there were several writers who worked on the script, including Quentin Tarantino, but that doesn’t detract from it—particularly since the final product is so good. It ranks highly among my submarine movies, alongside films like 'Destination Tokyo'; I still haven't watched my copy of 'Das Boot'. It’s sad that Scott died a few years ago. He was a more skilled director than I initially thought. It’s often said we don’t appreciate talent until it’s lost. This film is essential viewing for those who like war movies, suspense films, or thrillers—it would fit comfortably alongside the works of someone like Sir Alfred Hitchcock or David Fincher and would pair well with 'Lifeboat' or 'They Were Expendable'.
