She’s certain about the existence of ghosts. I’ve watched all of Guillermo del Toro’s movies, but this one didn’t measure up to his work from recent years. It has his characteristic style—a gothic atmosphere and impressive visuals—but the story fell flat. I think the writing is where it went wrong. The actors did a good job portraying their characters, particularly the three leads. The beginning made me believe I was in for a truly frightening horror film. Really? They introduced ghosts as a central idea, but ended up creating something more like a fantasy-thriller. There was an excess of melodrama that slowed things down considerably, and then it shifted into a killer-thriller by the final act. It should have been scarier; they seemed to prioritize exploring flawed human nature over supernatural elements. They delivered what they set out to do, but not what I, as an audience member, wanted. I didn’t hate the movie entirely—I enjoyed parts of it beyond its plot. The costumes were well done, and the music complemented the script nicely. However, I was let down by the explanation for all the difficulties Edith experienced. After so much anticipation, what we got felt underwhelming and rushed, with predictable elements. It's worth seeing for the visuals if you’re not expecting another classic from del Toro. 6/10
