The film brought "Rocky IV" to mind, except instead of a Soviet boxer posing a threat, it’s “Damian” (Jonathan Majors). “Adonis,” the former champion, is enjoying a comfortable retirement, financially secure and content with his family while also overseeing the gym alongside “Duke” (Wood Harris). One day, he encounters someone sitting on his car and learns this person is actually a childhood friend who spent the last eighteen years in prison. This friend is now set on achieving success in boxing, prompting Adonis to intervene—only to realize that this intense fighter has his own plans, which will challenge the former champ’s abilities. The narrative feels like a blend of familiar storylines and unfolds with an unsurprising progression. Throw in some family issues and heightened emotional moments, and what remains is mostly unremarkable, feeling like a disappointing successor to the earlier installments in the series, which had more personality and were tougher. While the boxing sequences are filmed well, there’s no real sense of danger—I honestly lost interest. It's visually appealing, certainly, but not particularly engaging.
