This installment feels like a direct descendant of that earlier rivalry, setting “Adonis” (Michael B. Jordan), currently holding the title, against “Viktor” (Florian Munteau). Viktor is the offspring of “Drago” (Dolph Lundgren) and “Mrs. Drago” (Brigitte Nielsen), who were defeated by “Rocky” (Sylvester Stallone) back in 1985—and now he’s looking for a chance to challenge the champion. This time, though, coach “Rocky” believes taking the fight is an error and abandons his protégé to fend for himself. It's all rather complicated, isn’t it? Naturally, a return bout seems inevitable, but will Rocky return to assist Adonis in defending his title? The fighting scenes are decent enough, however, most of the rest falls pretty flat. Jordan looks good and has obviously put in the effort to appear believable as a fighter, but the acting overall is stiff—as much as ever from Lundgren—and some of the lines are just awful. There’s a bit of family trouble and a small romantic subplot, but it feels very disjointed, lacking real suspense. It also lacks that iconic Conti score, and Stallone doesn't appear enough to have any significant impact on this lackluster imitation of a biography. In some respects, it seems like something that would have been created during the height of the Cold War to stoke the old East versus West rivalry. Ultimately, I just found it disappointing.
