Creature from the Black Lagoon is an enjoyable movie released in 1954. Considering how much time has passed, it holds up remarkably well. Some of the techniques used to create the creature seem a bit odd at times, but generally I felt the intended sense of unease – particularly because of the creature’s appearance. It seems like a very polished film, which isn't unexpected given that it came from Universal Studios. There’s also an air of authenticity about it; whether it all quite makes sense or not, it certainly sounds convincing. I found the actors to be good and they interacted well with each other. Richard Carlson, Julie Adams, and Richard Denning were particularly memorable, although Nestor Paiva was pretty good too. It's worth mentioning that two performers portrayed the Gillman: Ben Chapman when he was on land, and Ricou Browning in underwater scenes. Being the first of three films, I’m looking forward to seeing the other installments.
