This film combines elements of "The Dukes of Hazzard" with "The Exorcist," featuring José Ferrer and Sue Lyon among the cast. A woman (Lyon) buys a peculiar charm that unexpectedly assists her in managing her difficult, disabled husband (Ferrer), mainly because of a possessed black Camaro. John Ericson portrays a doctor concerned about the situation, while Leslie Parrish plays his nurse. John Carradine appears, but his role is minimal. "Crash!" (1976) marks the second effort from low-budget filmmaker Charles Band—and possibly his first. It’s essentially a less skillful (and more little-known) version of "The Car," though it was released before that film. Both movies would later inspire “Christine,” and they were probably influenced by “Killdozer.” Although I'm assigning this mid-70s oddity a fairly poor grade because the plot doesn’t make much sense, the filmmaking is suspect, the acting isn't great (Ericson particularly), and the vehicle explosions don't seem believable, it does have some interesting aspects for those who are curious. For example, the scenes depicting the car’s ‘possession,’ marked by red eyes, are well-executed and quite unsettling. So, yes, it’s a flawed movie, but it has its merits and is oddly captivating despite its obvious shortcomings. Lyon is probably most recognized as the attractive teenager in “Lolita” and "The Night of the Iguana." She was thirty years old during filming and seemed too slender to me. As for Parrish, she may be familiar from her memorable appearance in the Star Trek episode “Who Mourns for Adonais,” which aired a decade earlier. My initial description compared this film to "The Dukes of Hazzard" meeting "The Exorcist," but "The Dukes of Hazzard" wouldn’t actually premiere until about two and a half years after this movie's original release. Films with car-based mayhem from the mid-70s, like “Eat My Dust,” would be more appropriate comparisons. The film has a running time of 1 hour, 28 minutes, and was filmed in Fillmore, California (standing in for San Cecilia), approximately 45 miles northwest of Los Angeles. GRADE: C-/C
