A carpenter wearing furs cuts down an impressive tree in the untouched forests of Quebec, utilizing some of the timber to craft a rocking chair. This chair then passes through the hands of his fiancée, becoming his wife’s, and later serves as a plaything for their children, who use it to mimic trains and the burgeoning railway system while Montreal expands around them. The chair accumulates wear and tear over the years until it's eventually set aside, finding an unexpected and rather lovely new purpose as part of a display at a contemporary art museum—when not occupied by the security guard. I found this very enjoyable. The music ranges from spirited dances to somber string arrangements; the characters often possess qualities reminiscent of Dickens’ creations, reflecting how this small settlement of wooden homes near the St. Lawrence River evolves into a more urban landscape of high-rises and concrete. The animation transitions vividly between scenes, gently guiding us through a timeline of industrial progress while still allowing us to appreciate the simpler aspects of these pioneers' lives as snow often falls quietly and deeply around them. In many respects, it resembles a collection of Christmas cards, making it a worthwhile fifteen minutes—a unique take on holiday entertainment.
