I was able to catch this film during its initial release in New York City, way back in 2000, just before my return trip to Europe. 'Coyote Ugly' works well as a romantic comedy, particularly appealing to those who didn’t experience films like 'Flashdance' or 'Saturday Night Fever'. Piper Perabo portrays an ambitious songwriter hoping for a record deal and the chance to have others perform her songs. However, reality intervenes. The narrative isn't groundbreaking, but it is well-constructed and reliable. It becomes clear why she finds herself dancing in a bar—no need to reveal that here. We also understand her father’s disappointment. John Goodman delivers a noteworthy performance; their dynamic occasionally brought to mind the relationship between Madonna and Danny Aiello in the 'Father Don't Preach' music video, where a parent reluctantly acknowledges their child’s maturation, and the child simply desires their approval. Following the television trailer, I immediately visited the actual Coyote Ugly Saloon on 1st Avenue, which served as inspiration for the film (or at least, that’s my understanding). The real bar isn't nearly as visually striking as what’s depicted onscreen. Nevertheless, they do spray disruptive patrons with beer and there is dancing on the bar—though it’s by female customers rather than the waitresses. They can also be quite assertive if you request something not on their menu (anything beyond beer and Jack Daniels), and they participate in drinking alongside the clientele. A curious detail is that the movie explains why the performers don't become intoxicated. I realize, I know—we’ve already seen 'Flashdance'. (Also a Jerry Bruckheimer production) but I don’t object to this kind of story being refreshed periodically, do you? Though the music selection could have felt more modern.
