The Three Jabonies Three brothers who haven’t spoken in five years are brought together when their father asks them to drive a vintage Coupe de Ville from Detroit to Florida for his wife's birthday. The task seems simple enough, but tensions quickly rise as the military brother, the dreamer brother, and the rebellious teen brother must navigate each other’s personalities while keeping the car safe—or else. Coupe de Ville, directed by Joe Roth, features Arye Gross, Daniel Stern & Patrick Dempsey in the roles of the brothers, Alan Arkin & Rita Taggart as their parents, and Annabeth Gish appears as a romantic interest. While it doesn't offer many surprises with its basic premise, this film has the ability to lift your spirits and deserves more recognition than it gets. Anyone familiar with sibling conflict will likely connect with these brothers from the start, and the story’s eventual reveals manage to hit all the expected emotional notes. The movie begins with a flashback showing the boys fighting as children. Twelve years later, they reluctantly take on this journey cleverly arranged by their father (played wonderfully by Arkin), leading to arguments and several humorous situations skillfully handled by Stern, Gross, and Dempsey. Along the way, they encounter typical road trip obstacles and meet various quirky characters. Despite its comedic elements, the film has a deeper meaning, and it’s perhaps during the more serious and touching scenes that Coupe de Ville rises above a standard coming-of-age story. The acting is consistently good throughout, Roth's directing style is pleasant to watch, and the soundtrack is excellent for fans of 1950s and 60s rock music. It doesn’t break any new ground—something that critics have previously used as a point of criticism—but it’s easy to become fond of this film; its themes resonate with viewers, and it's both funny and meaningful. If you get the opportunity, give it a try; it may connect with you in the same way it did with me. 8/10
