It’s a Transylvanian setting in the 1970s, steeped in Euro Gothic style. Despite the awkwardness of the dubbed audio, four women appear somewhat silly in their obviously mass-produced but visually appealing period costumes. The castle's isolated ambiance is quite effective; it feels like a comfortable Gothic retreat complete with amenities such as a library and even a swimming pool. All that was missing were garlic and some basic defenses against less fantastical dangers. However, the narrative quickly loses its way, mirroring the events shown before the opening credits—shifting abruptly from moody, foggy Gothic imagery to scenes of graphic violence. The Madonna/Whore dichotomy is explored without restraint.
