Wuchak on Count Dracula's Great Love

6/10 · Nov 10, 2024

The story unfolds in the Tihuța Pass within the Carpathian Mountains, close to Transylvania, where a stagecoach carrying five people—one man and four women—experiences mechanical failure. With no other options, they must find shelter at a nearby sanatorium. Doctor Marlowe (Paul Naschy) greets them, but could he possibly be… “Count Dracula’s Great Love” (1973), also known as “Cemetery Girls,” functions as a Spanish follow-up to Hammer's "Dracula" films, extending up to "Scars of Dracula." It shares similarities with “Dracula, Prince of Darkness,” yet incorporates elements reminiscent of “The Satanic Rites of Dracula,” which came out afterward. Naschy was the leading figure in Spanish horror cinema from the late 1960s until the early 2000s. This marked his sole portrayal of Dracula and presented the first depiction of the Count as a romantic figure, an approach that would later influence Frank Langella’s 1979 film and Coppola's 1992 movie. Here, Paul bears a resemblance to a younger Brando. Haydée Politoff is memorable among the female cast members due to her striking auburn hair. She develops into the central female character; however, it’s noteworthy that Naschy didn’t find much chemistry with her. As my title suggests, this film essentially follows the "cabin-in-the-woods" formula. The “cabin” turns out to be a castle or, more precisely, a sanatorium, and the setting is the early 1900s. There's even a scene involving nude swimming. If you’re looking for a film in the style of Hammer horror—featuring decaying castles, dark forests, stagecoaches, hushed whispers spreading unsettling rumors, women dressed in Victorian clothing, vampires who drink blood, Dracula’s female companions, sinister ceremonies, and exposed breasts—then this one delivers those elements. The conclusion was something I particularly enjoyed, although there are some drawbacks, such as a cheesy booming voice that appears unexpectedly and excessive nudity which feels exploitative. The movie has a running time of 1 hour, 25 minutes and was filmed in Madrid. GRADE: B-
