A London surgeon, portrayed by Peter Cushing, finds himself involved with a younger model, Sue Lloyd, and their relationship becomes complicated after a tragic event. The film explores the lengths he’ll go to in order to demonstrate his affection for her. "Corruption" (1968) draws inspiration from "Eyes Without a Face," also known as “The Horror Chamber of Dr. Faustus” (1960), which itself has roots in Bela Lugosi's "The Corpse Vanishes" (1942). However, it manages to distinguish itself through its unique elements, incorporating aspects reminiscent of "Cul-de-sac" (1966) and offering a glimpse into the fashionable counterculture of England, similar to what would be seen in "Dracula A.D. 1972." Like that Hammer film, Cushing appears in a contemporary setting rather than a traditional gothic one. It’s comparable to a Hammer production despite not actually being one. The story seems to combine elements of the Frankenstein narrative with the legend of Countess Bathory, all set against the backdrop of mod 60's London. There's an early scene where the doctor (Cushing) is invited to a trendy party, and it’s amusing to watch his discomfort. Cushing was 54 years old during filming while Lloyd was 28. Other notable female characters include Kate O'Mara (as Val), Wendy Varnals (Terry), and Vanessa Howard (the blonde at the party with the distinctive voice). Several other actresses appear, but for me, the most memorable is the redhead in the red corset at the lively gathering. I appreciated that the film wasn’t confined to studio sets; the location photography is quite appealing, particularly the shots of the seaside vacation home. I also enjoyed an unexpected development later on—not the final twist—that feels like something out of a comic book and injects a vibrant eccentricity into the climax. The ending shouldn't be viewed negatively. The filmmakers made a smart choice in leaving the future uncertain, hinging on what one character will do with the questionable information they now possess. The movie has a runtime of 1 hour, 31 minutes, and was filmed at Isleworth Studios, located just west of London, with additional scenes shot within the city and greater London area, including the beach sequence in Seaford, East Sussex—approximately a 45-minute drive south of the city. There are two versions available: a UK version and an international version; I watched the former, which includes Jan Waters as a Soho prostitute wearing a negligee. The alternate version features Marianne Morris appearing nude. GRADE: B-/B (6.5/10)
