It's a truly excellent film, one I’d gladly watch again and happily suggest to others. I often find myself hoping other films would adopt such an uncomplicated yet effective storytelling approach. It doesn’t adhere to the usual three-act format—though it technically contains those elements—and feels more akin to experiencing a video game. The film begins conventionally, but what follows is divided into sections resembling video game "levels," which unfold as Coraline learns new things and progresses through different parts of her surroundings / the house. There’s considerable thematic depth present, primarily dealing with connections between kids and their parents and how to deal with life's challenges—but it’s all conveyed so subtly that it never feels heavy-handed. The Beldam is a wonderfully realized monster in the vein of something you might imagine lurking in the shadows. Though many aspects remain mysterious, there’s still a great deal shown about her and the world she inhabits. The movie also evokes comparisons to "The Wizard of Oz" in several respects, making it reassuring to know that well-made family films capable of referencing older classics still exist.
