Sigourney Weaver portrays Helen, a psychologist whose anxiety is so severe that she struggles to leave her apartment even for simple errands. Despite this, she possesses specialized knowledge regarding the motivations of serial killers—a skillset developed after a harrowing encounter with one previously, played by Harry Connick Jnr. When an imitator begins targeting young women, police officers Monahan (Holly Hunter) and Goetz (Dermot Mulroney) enlist her help to pursue this sadistic offender before he can claim more victims. The situation becomes further complicated as the killer initiates contact, taunting and provoking them while revealing his own moniker; however, will they be able to stop him before his actions escalate? It’s a passable crime drama, nothing particularly impressive. The actors perform adequately, but the storyline contains numerous inconsistencies that diminish any sense of suspense, leading to an easily predictable conclusion. Sigourney Weaver delivers a serviceable performance, and Hunter embodies a spirited and resolute police officer, though the film's pacing is slow at times, with several diversions detracting from its overall engagement. It’s possible that director Jon Amiel could have improved the movie by streamlining the script and eliminating some of the superfluous character backstory; this might have resulted in a more gripping chase narrative. As it stands, the production feels rather forgettable.
