I remember seeing this movie in theaters when it was released, and there was quite a bit of attention surrounding it – not so much for the film itself, but because of the popularity of CB radio and, naturally, C.W. McCall’s song. Ernest Borgnine delivers a solid performance as Sheriff "Lyle," who is clever but dishonest, and ultimately contributes to pushing trucker "Rubber Duck" (Kris Kristofferson) and some of his companions too far. A brawl in a bar and several officers with injuries lead them to needing to escape to New Mexico, and during their journey, roughly half a dozen trucks begin drawing others in, like they’re magnets – quickly forming a line that stretches for about a mile, which presents an issue for law enforcement as media coverage increases. The fact that the police believe the first truck is loaded with dangerous chemicals doesn't hurt the convoy either. Ali McGraw ("Melissa") joins them on this journey, and she really doesn't appear to be having any fun as what starts out as a fairly enjoyable story gradually becomes as dull and slow-moving as the line of trucks themselves. Madge Sinclair and Burt Young offer some memorable supporting performances, but ultimately, this feels like a movie centered around a song, and the more you hear that tune, the less significant anything else seems to be.
