It’s remarkable how much Sergio Leone’s initial two films in the ‘Man With No Name’ series—adaptations of Akira Kurosawa's 'Yojimbo' and 'Sanjuro' into spaghetti westerns—have impacted movies over the past half-century. It seems that the rapid shifts in Italian filmmaking, moving from neorealism seen in films like ‘Ossessione’ and ‘Rome, Open City’, to historical epics, then to spaghetti westerns, followed by 70's crime movies and eventually space invasion films after the widespread popularity of 'Alien' and 'Star Wars', has had a significant effect on cinema. This approach demonstrated that filmmakers could create compelling pictures with limited budgets, capitalizing on the success of more well-known predecessors. As someone who appreciates nostalgia, certain elements stood out and elevated my opinion: seeing the Twin Towers in New York City, hearing Ennio Morricone’s music, and spotting the Cannon Pictures logo were all particularly meaningful. It's a suspenseful science fiction film that is exceptionally crafted considering its cost, and it’s not just something to watch once—it’s one I would recommend owning and revisiting. Finding this gem within my Mill Creek ‘Nightmare Worlds’ collection was truly a highlight.
