Following the unexpected death of her sister, who died by jumping from a hospital roof, detective Dodson (Rachel Weisz) seeks out Constantine (Keanu Reeves) to help uncover what happened. He’s known for dealing with supernatural threats, and she hopes he can shed light on why her sister took her own life. It doesn't take long for him and his driver Chas (Shia LaBeouf) to discover that demonic forces are at play, and even the angel Gabriel (Tilda Swinton) may be involved. Constantine has experienced hell firsthand, witnessed its horrors, and believes he’s destined to return there unless God intervenes and allows him into heaven. Because of this, he dedicates himself to capturing malevolent spirits who aren't yet able to fully enter our world but still cause trouble, sending them back where they came from. A key element in his investigation is the chair used for electrocution—a gateway to hell—though Midnite (Djimon Hounsou) guards it and believes it’s best left undisturbed. As Dodson and Constantine dig deeper, they realize they're caught up in a scheme that could lead to Satan controlling the entire planet; will they be able to stop it before it’s too late? Reeves and Weisz both deliver strong performances in this well-paced and unsettling film, which takes its time getting started but becomes a compelling mystery with an emphasis on plot and characters rather than flashy special effects. Swinton's role is limited, but she and Hounsou contribute to the overall sense of menace, while LaBeouf injects some humor into the story with his inexperienced yet occasionally helpful actions. As the conflict intensifies, the film builds effectively toward a tense ending that raises questions about good versus evil, heaven, hell, ambition, and even hospital architecture. It's not a movie you’ll likely remember forever, but it is fairly unique, and I found it enjoyable.
