I typically enjoy Tim Curry’s performances, however, his work in this rather slight and unconvincing combination of "Tarzan" and "King Solomon's Mines" is baffling. The story centers on a quest to locate a lost group who vanished while being led by the offspring of an American businessman looking for diamonds capable of generating power for a laser—supposedly intended for communication, though the true purpose remains unclear. Subsequently, Curry and Laura Linney’s character, "Dr. Rees," join forces with the Quatermain-inspired “Kelly” (Ernie Hudson) to venture into the dangerous jungle environment under his experienced direction. This film seems to have every element needed to fail. The performances are dreadful, the script is even worse—this applies particularly to a talkative gorilla who frequently intervenes to resolve situations—and the low-budget CGI only highlights how unoriginal and forgettable this movie is. Curry ("Homolka") appears completely disengaged, and Linney doesn’t contribute much in terms of seriousness or depth to her heavily written part. It has a 12 rating, but that might be an indication of the intelligence level they are targeting with this film. I suggest you skip it.
