Confidence is an agreeable film that adheres closely to familiar genre conventions without attempting anything unexpected. I believe this picture had the potential to be truly exceptional if it had only aimed higher. The plot developments felt predictable, and a bit more intrigue would have been welcome. The romantic scenes lacked intensity, and the dialogue could have been sharper. Even the visual presentation seemed somewhat restrained. The central problem is that the consequences feel insignificant, and even if they were substantial, you wouldn't necessarily connect with the people involved. It’s clear from the start that they will triumph, no one faces permanent danger, and they cheerfully spell out their methods for the viewers before departing in a car, though not toward a picturesque sunset—it's a noir film, so they simply drive off into the darkness. However, it doesn't prove to be a letdown. Achieving this kind of balance is challenging, and I value the work that went into it. Just don’t anticipate anything groundbreaking; it’s a standard crime/grifter movie.
