John Hamm portrays I.M. Fletcher, who finds himself embroiled in a perplexing situation when he arrives at an expensive apartment arranged by his Italian girlfriend and discovers a deceased young woman. The police arrive, and Detective Monroe, portrayed by Roy Wood Jr., along with his energetic partner Griz (Ayden Mayeri), immediately consider him a suspect. Feeling the need to clear his name, Fletcher decides to employ his well-known investigative abilities to uncover the truth. Simultaneously, his girlfriend back home is dealing with her father’s kidnapping and a ransom demand involving one of nine stolen Picasso paintings. Could locating these missing artworks hold the key to resolving both mysteries? This leads him to encounter Horan, an art broker who seems overly concerned about germs (played by Kyle MacLachlan), initiating a complex pursuit. The film largely revolves around Hamm's performance, and he initially succeeds in creating amusing interactions with the supporting cast—including Andi (Lorenza Izzo), her rival Countess Sylvia (Marcia Gay Harden), and his somewhat unreliable neighbor Eve (Annie Mulolo). However, this character development eventually becomes repetitive, and the latter portion of the comedy feels familiar, resembling a series of predictable comedic scenarios reminiscent of television sitcom episodes. While Hamm demonstrates good comedic timing, particularly in his scene with Mumolo, the overall experience is unoriginal. It’s certainly not comparable to an Agatha Christie novel.
