While there are other films adapted from Saturday Night Live that could be considered superior—perhaps ‘The Blues Brothers’ or either of the ‘Wayne's World’ movies come to mind—this one certainly ranks among the very best and is within the top five ever produced. Laraine Newman and Jane Curtin deserve more recognition as comedic performers; they were essential figures who helped sustain the show during its peak years. A frequently overlooked aspect of films derived from SNL sketches is the significance of the ensemble members. ‘Coneheads’ boasts an exceptionally strong supporting cast compared to others, and although director Barron hasn't achieved widespread fame in film—his notable credits are limited to this one and 'Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles'—his experience creating some of the most memorable music videos ever (like Dire Straits' 'Money for Nothing,' Michael Jackson's 'Billie Jean,' and A-Ha’s ‘Take On Me’) proved ideal for the comedic moments in this film. It’s absolutely worth seeing, even now.
