It's certainly an enjoyable film from the era I came of age in, and it’s remarkably entertaining. The movie offers a distinctive experience, especially considering what we now know about Schwarzenegger's life and his subsequent career path; observing him at this early point is fascinating. (I still need to watch 'Stay Hungry,' by the way.) Sometimes I find myself hoping he had continued making movies like this—along with the ‘Terminator’ films. When he was at his best, it would be difficult to name anyone more skilled in handling this type of story. Director Milius clearly understands the demands of the swords-and-sandals/fantasy setting. A strong and largely unrecognized group of supporting actors also contributes significantly to Arnie's performance.
