Con Air comes from director Simon West and producer Jerry Bruckheimer, featuring Nicolas Cage, John Cusack, and John Malkovich in leading roles. The story follows Cameron Poe (Cage), a man returning home to his wife and daughter after years in prison for manslaughter. He’s on a transport plane carrying the most dangerous criminals in America to a new maximum-security facility. Predictably, things go wrong, and the prisoners seize control of the aircraft, with Poe as the only one capable of stopping them from escaping. There's no denying that Con Air is among the most extreme action movies you’re likely to encounter. But it’s aware of this aspect, fully embraces it, and seems to enjoy it immensely. The film presents a collection of criminals, their histories of offenses as extensive as the over-the-top explosions and one-liners. On the ground are a stressed John Cusack and an irate Colm Meaney; their interactions are almost as amusing as what’s happening on the plane—where characters like Billy Bedlam (Nick Chinlund), Cyrus The Virus (Malkovich), & The Marietta Mangler (Steve Buscemi) take craziness to another level. Director West, apparently under instructions from Bruckheimer, delivers a series of explosive action sequences, each one more unbelievable than the last. It’s well-edited and moves at a good pace for an action film. There's also a definite sense of suspense accompanying the intense thrills. As Cage removes his shirt to reveal a vest, we find ourselves rooting for a genuinely appealing hero; it’s intentionally humorous, but Scott Rosenberg’s writing makes his character so solid that we overlook each outlandish heroic deed. Ving Rhames, Danny Trejo, M.C. Gainey & Rachael Ticotin also appear, with the latter performing well as the only woman surrounded by an enormous amount of testosterone. The plot is pure fluff, certainly, but like the cast seems to be having a great time with it, so should any fan of action comedies. 7.5/10
