This film, "Companion," feels like a modern update of Michael Crichton's "Westworld" from 1973. The advancements in artificial intelligence have reached a point where people might soon be able to purchase companions designed for any purpose—however disturbing that prospect may seem. It’s hard to shake the feeling of unease about having one of these things in your home. If you aren't bothered by that concept now, perhaps you will be when, as is likely, things begin to fall apart. The resulting disaster is massive and very enjoyable, reminiscent of Donald E. Westlake’s work. The story takes a recognizable premise and develops it into something completely absorbing, consistently surprising the viewer with its twists and turns in a way that's often funny and always fascinating.
