“Companion” initially appears to be another horror movie about a vacation gone wrong, but that’s misleading. Drew Hancock, who wrote and directed the film, has created a genuinely enjoyable and gripping story combining slasher elements, science fiction concepts dealing with existence, and a pointed feminist perspective into an entertaining and thought-provoking experience filled with bloodshed. It's far from your typical popcorn movie, and it ranks among my favorites this year. The narrative centers on Iris (Sophie Thatcher), who seems like an average person accompanying her boyfriend Josh (Jack Quaid) and his friends (Megan Suri, Lukas Gage, and Harvey Guillén) to a secluded cabin for a weekend getaway. The trip takes a disturbing turn as secrets come to light, particularly when it’s discovered that Iris isn't what she appears to be. Without giving away key plot points, the film deliberately reveals aspects of its characters, resulting in surprising discoveries and an extremely chaotic ending that fully embraces its campy and exaggerated style. The acting is outstanding across the board, with Thatcher and Quaid delivering particularly strong performances. She drives the story forward through a combination of vulnerability, strength, and unsettling uncertainty, while he’s believable as a flawed partner. The supporting characters are also well-developed, from a slick Russian host (Rupert Friend) to Josh’s dependable friends who become entangled in the escalating mayhem. Although the storyline occasionally feels familiar, it remains surprisingly unpredictable. Hancock effectively utilizes the isolated setting to build suspense before unleashing the violence, and he strikes a good balance between humor and horror. Underneath the fun and gore are some significant ideas about artificial intelligence, misogyny, unhealthy relationships, and self-determination. The film examines how women can be trained to accommodate harmful partners, explores the idea of what “perfect” relationships look like, and questions the true meaning of being human. The script addresses these topics with cleverness, blending suspense, dark humor, and a sense of empowerment that becomes clearer as the story progresses. It’s possible to simply enjoy this film on a surface level, but viewers seeking something more will be rewarded. “Companion” delivers an exciting combination of horror, science fiction, and feminist commentary, making it a total delight. Filled with blood, boldness, and entertaining plot twists, this exploration of power and identity is presented in a fun, violent, and delightfully over-the-top package.
