Reno on Come Out and Play

5/10 · Aug 18, 2016

The title suggests something exciting for a thriller, and unfortunately, that’s pretty much all it delivers. I didn’t read the book or see the earlier movie, but I was initially drawn to the premise; however, my experience watching this film left me feeling let down. It's certainly a low-budget production featuring children in some unsettling situations, though I don't think that warrants completely removing scenes of violence. I’m disappointed by how much they seemed to shy away from elements crucial to a movie like this. While I understand the need to avoid showing kids committing harmful acts, the film didn’t live up to what it promised. Anyone hoping for a genuinely good thriller would likely feel frustrated. It could be described as a horror-thriller aimed at families, and that's essentially what you get. The story follows an American couple—the woman is seven months pregnant—who travel to a tourist destination in Mexico only to discover the town has been abandoned. As they search for other people, they become targets of those responsible for the island’s current state. A chase ensues, and the resolution arrives with a minor surprise. As I suspected, this film didn't really impress me, though some viewers might find it more enjoyable. If you’re looking for something like "Hatchet," definitely don’t expect anything similar. It may have been effective as a movie made 30 or 35 years ago, but the story feels dated when set in modern times. The core idea was strong, but I wanted a fresh take and some updated elements. I do want to acknowledge the director's efforts in handling multiple roles to get this film made. Ultimately, it’s not a terrible movie of any kind—it just doesn’t pack the punch expected within its genre; that’s my only criticism. 5/10
