Having appreciated Randolph Scott’s performances early on in his career with films like ‘Hot Saturday’ (1932) and later in ‘Ride the High Country’ (1962), along with several others ('Pittsburgh', 'Virginia City' and 'My Favorite Wife'), I decided it was time to explore some of his most significant Westerns, those he made with Budd Boetticher. Scott brings something special to these movies. I’ve watched three out of the seven they did together, and he portrays a character who is often troubled and introspective, even in a film like ‘Buchanan Rides Alone’, which has moments that border on comedy. The script by Burt Kennedy was very well written, with beautiful music and cinematography. It was obvious this was a production team that knew exactly what they were trying to achieve—a rare thing these days. Most films are either too long or too short, but this one felt perfectly paced, like Goldilocks finding the porridge just right. While it’s not quite as strong as ‘Ride Lonesome’, I couldn't bring myself to rate it any lower. It's true that Westerns often don’t get the respect they deserve, but when you encounter a film of this caliber, you’re thankful someone took the time and effort to make it—and that Boetticher and Scott collaborated on more than just seven projects.
