My son gave me this Russian science fiction film as a birthday present, and it’s funny because I probably wouldn't have chosen it myself – which seems silly now that I've seen it, and I'm glad he did. It isn’t a bad movie at all. It has a surreal quality, and you definitely need to concentrate to understand what’s happening. The setting where the main character is located feels strange, sad, and beautiful simultaneously. I thought the special effects were quite good, especially considering the budget was only 4 million dollars; that makes them really impressive. You probably get more for your money in Russia than you do over here in Hollywood. I appreciate the overall concept of a landscape where fragments of reality are scattered against a backdrop resembling a giant brain’s synapse network. That's not entirely inaccurate and works well with the narrative. The plot is maybe somewhat predictable just based on the title, but it’s still not bad and makes sense overall. It is science fiction, after all, so that’s acceptable. I’ve noticed some people criticizing the movie, claiming the story is copied from *Matrix* and other films. I don't think that’s true; this film has its own story to tell. Some have also complained about the acting being poor, but that might be because they watched a dubbed version. If you can’t watch a movie in its original language, it’s best not to comment on the performances. The most ridiculous thing I read was someone saying “Not too bad for not being a Hollywood movie.” Seriously? Considering all the woke and nonsensical things Hollywood produces these days, that's pretty laughable. The one area where the film could have been better was the ending; it just sort of faded away without a real high point, nothing particularly good or bad about it. Other than that, this is definitely worth watching for any science fiction fan.
