I wasn't anticipating this one at all. It proved to be something different, and that’s what appeals to me, as I often find myself tired of the usual action movies, romances, horror flicks, and thrillers. However, it definitely had its share of problems; they were difficult to overlook. Frankly, I even wondered if those imperfections were essential to the story itself. Ultimately, enjoyment is key, and this film delivered that without needing to make a lot of sense. So, just switch off your critical thinking skills and enjoy it like you would a children’s story. I hadn't seen any previews or heard anything about the plot before watching. I simply went in expecting nothing much, and the beginning wasn't particularly captivating because returning to one's hometown is such a familiar trope. But once the narrative took an unexpected turn, everything shifted considerably. The film centers on two cities, each embodying both dark humor and catastrophic events. The story involves a young woman who’s out of work and struggling with alcohol as she returns home after a breakup. She reconnects with an old friend and begins again. Then, she learns that across the globe, a massive creature is destroying a city. It turns out she's somehow connected to this event, and the film then explores how her reaction changes everything, culminating in a surprise at the conclusion. Anne Hathaway gave a solid performance, but Jason Sudeikis also did well. They both guided the story forward effectively. This is a movie meant for pure enjoyment, not intense analysis. It features giant monsters, but with noticeably less reliance on special effects. The writing by this Spanish filmmaker, who has previously made some impressive movies, is quite inventive. I believe it’s somewhat overlooked. If you're just looking to be entertained, then I would suggest watching it. 8/10
