Colorado Territory comes from director Raoul Walsh, with a screenplay by Edmund H. North and John Twist based on W.R. Burnett’s "High Sierra." Joel McCrea, Virginia Mayo, Dorothy Malone, and Henry Hull lead the cast. David Buttolph handled the music, and Sidney Hickox was in charge of cinematography. Walsh revisits his 1941 film High Sierra, transplanting it into a Western landscape—and the outcome is impressive. McCrea portrays outlaw Wes McQueen, released from prison with intentions to reform, but he's pressured into one final train robbery because there’s a bounty on his head. If he can evade the authorities, he hopes to start anew, adopting a different identity and finding solace in a relationship with Colorado Carson (Mayo). The question is whether he can outrun the law and those seeking to profit from him. Though it's a remake of a well-regarded film noir, Colorado Territory embodies that same genre. While it doesn’t quite reach the heights of the 1941 version starring Bogart, this film possesses considerable merits. The thematic elements are pure noir, with Walsh resisting easy solutions and faithfully presenting Burnett’s novel's darker aspects on screen—including a devastating conclusion. The visuals are outstanding, both in terms of light and shadow and the beauty of the outdoor settings. The acting is also strong; McCrea looks completely natural as a Westerner, Mayo and Malone bring vibrancy to their roles, and Hull provides substantial support. Standard Western elements like robberies, fights, stunts, treacherous villains, and betrayals are present, interwoven with the noirish core of a man struggling against his destiny, burdened by his history—all contributing to an overall sense of impending doom throughout the narrative. It’s not often brought up when discussing film noir Westerns, but it deserves recognition as one of the best. 9/10
