The character “Max” (Jamie Foxx) is the sort of taxi driver you’d likely find yourself avoiding. He possesses a strong opinion on virtually everything, and while he clearly knows his way around Los Angeles, that would probably annoy me to no end. However, this doesn't seem to bother "Annie" (Jada Pinkett Smith), a prosecutor working for the government who makes and then loses a wager with him regarding the quickest route to where she needs to go. “Max” is an unusual person, seemingly holding onto a somewhat innocent belief about what his life might hold in store. He’s spent over ten years driving a cab, recently using the money to cover his mother's medical expenses, but he views this as only temporary before moving on to something else. What exactly that "something" is remains unclear. Perhaps an offer of $600 from one passenger to be his exclusive driver for the evening might shed some light? That’s what “Vincent” (Tom Cruise), who appears quite respectable, proposes. All he needs to do is drive him to six different locations around the city, wait briefly at each while Vincent takes care of some business, and then take him to LAX for an early flight the following day. It doesn't seem like much to ask. However, things quickly escalate when a body attempts a rope-free bungee jump off his cab’s roof – and he realizes that his employer’s “business” isn’t entirely above board. His options become severely restricted, forcing him to continue cooperating while searching for an escape route. Meanwhile, FBI agent "Fanning" (Mark Ruffalo) is investigating the first incident of the night, so there's a glimmer of hope that "Max" won't end up in the ocean. Although it occasionally feels like a standard procedural, the film’s pace and Foxx’s strong performance contribute to a more mysterious atmosphere as their night progresses, ultimately bringing his day full circle in an unexpected way. I wasn’t entirely satisfied with the ending; it seemed to back down from its darker intentions, a common occurrence in this type of movie. Nevertheless, along the way, it's quite an entertainingly threatening experience that allows Cruise to portray a charismatic villain and demonstrates that “Max” isn’t someone to be underestimated, and that Los Angeles taxis are surprisingly durable vehicles!
