Steer clear of those characters if you can eliminate them entirely. It’s inevitable that with action movies, particularly those starring familiar figures from our childhood, some people will defend even the least impressive ones. *Collateral Damage* marked the moment when many of Arnold Schwarzenegger's most dedicated fans recognized it signaled a shift in his career. The film was notably delayed for a year because of the September 11th attacks on the World Trade Center. It centers around Schwarzenegger as a Los Angeles firefighter who, after losing his wife and child in a terrorist attack, decides to enact vengeance himself. The story takes place primarily in Colombia, where he embarks on a solo mission to kill those accountable for his loss. Expect explosions, fast-paced action sequences, substandard special effects, clunky lines of dialogue, excessive displays of machismo, and stereotypical villains. It functions adequately enough for viewers who enjoy this kind of movie; it’s even somewhat pleasant to see Schwarzenegger portraying a character with vulnerabilities, someone who frequently suffers—both physically and emotionally. However, the film feels worn out and overextended, squandering a supporting cast that includes Elias Koteas, John Turturro, and John Leguizamo. It's acceptable as a way to pass some time, but if Schwarzenegger hadn’t been in it, no one would likely notice its absence. 5/10
