Following the breakdown of a space station’s orbit, one of its fuel tanks drifted to Western Australia, where “Quinn” (Liam Neeson) and “Romano” (Lesley Manville) identified a dangerous fungus growing on it. Recognizing its toxic and transformative properties, they sent it back to America for containment deep underground. Years later, the government sold the facility, which subsequently became a storage location for personal belongings. It’s there that “Travis” - also known as “Teacake” (Joe Keery) works the night shift alongside new employee “Naomi” (Georgina Campbell). After recently assisting elderly “Mrs. Rooney” (Dame Vanessa Redgrave), they begin their nightly duties when a beeping sound alerts them. Both hear it, and upon investigating, they break through a wall to find themselves in the abandoned military base where the forgotten substance has spread amongst insects and rodents living within the ventilation system. As they try to escape, they contact the facility’s helpline, which reactivates Quinn and Romano, who initially discovered the threat. Equipped with seven crucial items, they must hurry to the location to avert disaster before rain washes the lethal green material into the atmosphere, potentially leading to global conquest. While the plot is familiar zombie territory, there are amusing scenes involving animals – particularly deer – becoming infected, and Neeson and Manville bring a pleasant sense of elderly grumbling to their efforts to stop the bubbling and threatening goo that could destroy everyone. Ultimately, this film might be best remembered for Dame Vanessa’s appearances. Approaching her ninetieth year, it's hard not to wonder how much longer she will continue making movies, especially ones as silly as this. If you want a simple comedy, Keery and Campbell add some sci-fi elements with a dishonest manager selling faulty televisions and a scorned lover involved in the story; there are far worse ways to spend your time than watching films that don't take themselves too seriously. You probably won’t remember it, but it provides an enjoyable experience.
