David Oakes often appears in extended historical series on television, but opportunities in film have been scarce. This inventive and visually appealing adaptation of Piñol’s book features him as a young man—referred to only as "Friend"—who is stationed on an isolated island to monitor the weather. He's partnered with the peculiar "Gruner," portrayed by Ray Stevenson, and their strained dynamic frequently escalates due to the nightly necessity of protecting their lighthouse from a strange horde of aggressive sea creatures. The plot thickens when it’s revealed that “Gruner” has a casual relationship with one of these animals, which he mistreats badly. As the attacks persist each day, "Friend" attempts to uncover the reason behind them and discover a way to stop them. It's an unusual premise; the narrative doesn’t adhere to typical storytelling conventions. Not only is it unclear why the creatures are attacking, but we aren't given that information either. Their confusion mirrors our own, and combined with the isolation and harshness of their environment, it gradually creates a disturbing and surprisingly captivating atmosphere leading to a satisfactory ending. Jesús Olmo has adapted the novel judiciously, and Xavier Gens lets much of the sometimes graphic and violent imagery speak for itself. It’s definitely something worth seeing.
