A snowplow operator in the Colorado Rockies (Liam Neeson) sets out for retribution following his son’s death at the hands of a violent drug syndicate. Tom Bateman and Tom Jackson portray rival drug bosses, while Laura Dern appears as the main character's spouse. “Cold Pursuit,” released in 2019, is an unusual crime drama/thriller that serves as a reimagining of the director’s earlier Scandinavian film “In Order of Disappearance.” Rather than adhering to the conventions of a typical revenge story set against a snowy backdrop, it adopts a distinctive style reminiscent of filmmakers like Tarantino, the Coen brothers, and Guy Ritchie. Liam Neeson delivers a dependable performance; the winter landscapes are visually impressive, and the filmmaking is technically sound. However, I didn’t connect with the peculiar atmosphere or the seemingly ‘cool,’ amoral characters. Perhaps it's something inherent to Scandinavian cinema that doesn’t quite work when adapted for North American audiences. Despite this, there are enough enjoyable moments to recommend it if you're willing to accept a story involving criminal gangs preoccupied with eliminating one another alongside dark comedic elements. If you’re seeking comparable films considered superior, look into "Fargo" (1996), “Deadfall” (2012) and “The Big White” (2005).
