Nels Coxman, played by Liam Neeson, is an ordinary man living a quiet life in a Colorado ski town, working on road maintenance and sharing his days with his wife and son. He’s so modest that when he's named Citizen of the Year, he questions the honor and worries about dressing appropriately for the ceremony. Following the tragic death of his son from a heroin overdose, Nels struggles to accept the circumstances, even as it strains his marriage and leads him to contemplate ending his own life. In a moment of despair, he discovers that his son’s coworker was involved in illicit activities and that his son may have been an unintended casualty of criminal dealings. Driven by a newfound determination, Nels sets out to uncover the truth and seek retribution for his son's death, regardless of the repercussions. “Cold Pursuit” initially appears to be a typical revenge story, but it takes an unexpected turn shortly after Nels begins his quest. The film shifts into a dark comedy, complete with onscreen titles announcing character deaths and often employing gallows humor. It even deviates from focusing on Neeson for a significant portion of the runtime, instead highlighting other characters—rival crime bosses, the sheriff, and his enthusiastic detective (Emmy Rossum). Consequently, the movie defies expectations; while action sequences are present, it’s primarily a dark comedy with dramatic undertones. The tone feels more akin to what one might find at a film festival from an independent studio rather than a major release. Viewers who are devoted fans of Neeson's work may feel let down by this departure from the kinds of movies he has become known for, while others could appreciate the film’s unusual style. 3 stars out of 5
