Stephen Dorff’s presence initially caught my eye, and his shirtless scenes certainly made the beginning look encouraging. However, that turned out to be the best part of what is ultimately a disappointing horror mystery. The story follows “Cooper” (Dennis Quaid) and "Leah" (Sharon Stone), who move their children from urban life to an older house in the countryside. Some renovations are necessary, so they bring in "Dale" (Dorff), the son of the previous owner, to assist. That proves to be a regrettable decision because it becomes clear that this property might not have been the smartest investment for the family. Mike Figgis seems to attempt creating and maintaining an atmosphere of dread, but he’s undermined by a plot that feels too flimsy and underwhelming performances from both Stone and Quaid. The film doesn't really conclude; it just fades away. I didn't feel invested in any of the characters, and my attention disappeared once Dorff covered up. Kristen Stewart has an early role here, but it’s ultimately unnecessary, as is Christopher Plummer’s appearance—he seemingly required minimal effort for his part. This dull thriller lacks excitement.
