A series of deaths and disappearances involving young people has put intense strain on the police department in a Canadian city. A reporter—played by Tony Nardi—and a detective, portrayed by John Kapelos, are both seeking answers, but their efforts are complicated by concerns about the chief inspector’s connection to an informant, with Kenneth Welsh and Brian Markinson in those roles. Michael Moriarty appears as the local prosecutor, while Gloria Reuben takes on the part of a defense attorney. Patti LuPone is also featured as the District Attorney. “Cold Blooded,” which originally aired on Canadian television under the title “Bad Faith” before being released direct-to-video elsewhere, draws its story from Ian Adams' 1983 book "Bad Faith." The book itself was influenced by the crimes of Clifford Olson, a serial killer who committed murders in the Vancouver area between 1980 and 1981. Adams also penned the screenplay for this production. Viewers shouldn’t anticipate much in the way of fast-paced sequences; it's primarily a dialogue-driven drama that examines the inner workings of an urban investigation and its associated political issues. The story’s realistic, noir atmosphere is reasonably engaging, although certain plot points feel unclear, and a late development feels forced and obvious—though, to be fair, it *is* a movie. Despite its television premiere in Canada, “Cold Blooded” carries an R rating and contains scenes with female nudity, so that’s something to keep in mind. It brings to mind "Midnight Cop" from 1988, but the editing is noticeably better. The film's length is one hour and thirty-seven minutes, and it was filmed on location in Calgary, Alberta. GRADE: B-
