I’ll be honest, the script isn’t groundbreaking, which is why my rating stops at 8 stars. It centers on a young woman coming of age and finding her place within her family and beyond, while that family contends with challenges in an industry impacted by commercial pressures and environmental concerns. A unique element is that the protagonist's parents and brother are deaf—this is explained through the title, CODA, which stands for Child of Deaf Adults. That’s when things really take off, and I have a couple of thoughts: First, this film absolutely deserves all the praise and recognition it has gotten. Second, it might be the first time I've seen a remake surpass its original in every way. The performances from almost everyone are remarkably good. The production quality is superb. It’s genuinely funny—largely due to Troy Kotsur’s excellent work—and also unexpectedly moving. What could have been simply another forgettable story about growing up, Emilia Jones clearly invested a lot of effort into building a character that captivates viewers. Director Siân Heder deserves credit; the entire production is exceptionally well-done.
