I found myself liking this film, though I'm having trouble understanding why it’s generated so much excitement. Emilia Jones plays "Ruby," a gifted young vocalist with aspirations of going to music school. Her family resides in a coastal community where the local fishermen are facing increasing financial difficulties. As her father’s business is threatened, she must decide whether to remain at home or pursue her ambitions. A noteworthy aspect of the film lies in the fact that she's the only hearing member of her family. Both her parents (played by Troy Kotsur and Marlee Matlin) and her brother "Leo" (Daniel Durant) are deaf. While this certainly brings another layer to the story, the plot itself is rather unremarkable. Their deafness isn’t responsible for the family's problems; instead, a significant portion of the film focuses on their struggle to survive the downturn in their industry, alongside Ruby's romantic complications and her rigorous music teacher (Eugenio Derbez) consistently pushing her. The movie includes a memorable rendition of Joni Mitchell's "Both Sides Now," and at times we are shown moments where the family experiences sound—or the absence of it—which is quite impactful and offers some insight into how sounds are perceived by deaf individuals. It’s visually appealing, pleasant to watch, and the interactions between the parents and their daughter often bring both laughter and warmth. It has the potential to increase understanding, but as a film, it isn't particularly noteworthy.
