Miguel can’t understand why his family has always forbidden music, particularly given their distinguished musical past. He's set on discovering the reason behind this rule so he can follow in the footsteps of Ernesto, a famous singer reminiscent of Julio Iglesias and Justin Bieber. Fate intervenes when Miguel is unexpectedly sent to the colorful and animated realm of the dead during Day of the Dead celebrations. There, he meets Hector, who agrees to help him find his great-great grandfather, uncover the truth, and return home to a family that once celebrated music. He must hurry, as he only has until dawn to complete his mission—and a competition is underway. Meanwhile, other deceased relatives are also pursuing him with the goal of bringing him back without allowing him to embrace music. I felt the story's focus on familial devotion and loyalty occasionally leaned toward being overly sentimental, but the animation’s exceptional quality truly stands out – the expressive eyes and smiles convey so much more than dialogue ever could. The film successfully blends musical elements with intrigue and mystery, featuring a well-crafted script and a fast-moving plot that is genuinely enjoyable. It's best experienced in a cinema to fully appreciate the animators’ artistry, and fortunately, there’s plenty for adults to enjoy as well, thanks to some wonderfully eccentric characters.
