Tom Cruise delivers a performance that’s genuinely captivating and enjoyable here. His character, "Brian," is driven by ambition, yet continually hampered by his lack of schooling. Feeling discouraged, he goes to a bar where he meets "Doug" (Bryan Brown), and suddenly finds himself working as a bartender. It takes a little while to get going, but soon he has the customers completely charmed with his wit and playful nature, demonstrating a clear talent for the job. The initial thirty minutes or so are actually quite energetic and amusing. You also gain an understanding of just how demanding – almost frantic – it is to work behind the bar in a busy place; perhaps I’ll be more understanding next time I have to wait for my Sauvignon Blanc (though that's unlikely!). However, the majority of the film feels rather flimsy and uninspired. There's a romance, infidelity, heartbreak, an accidental dropped bottle – will he or won't he win over the girl, Elisabeth Shue? Then, just in case the overall lightness was becoming overwhelming, a touch of tragedy is introduced. The conclusion felt somewhat forced upon the audience, and after a hundred minutes it dragged on to reveal what was already predictable. If you don’t drink alcohol, you’ll most likely dislike this film. Even if you do enjoy drinking, you probably still won't think much of it, but at least you’ll pick up a tip about how to add fruit juice to a martini!
