Cobweb utilizes familiar horror tropes but manages to offer something slightly distinct, though not particularly unexpected. From the beginning, it’s clear what Cobweb signifies: a story about a child isolated by their parents due to being unusual and somewhat unsettling. The film distinguishes itself with several alterations that elevate it beyond standard expectations, largely for the better. A fresh approach to familiar elements results in some effective scares and an unanticipated resolution. However, the portrayal of the family feels less successful. It's evident they are a troubled group; the exaggeratedly cold depiction creates a stifling atmosphere. Introducing more authentic warmth into their relationships could have amplified the horror that ultimately occurs. The performances are adequate, particularly considering the youth of some of the actors. I’m uncertain about the choice to give the sister character's voice-over an affectation reminiscent of Marge Simpson, a lonely old maid. Ultimately, enough new elements are incorporated into a recognized horror framework to make this film worthwhile. It’s slightly diminished by the overly emphasized depiction of the family dynamic.
